Falling in love with my workspace

Vitra Charles Ray Eames DAW Chair

I spend an enormous time behind my computer, and for a very long time I used to work with my laptop on my lap from a sofa, a chair or (don’t shout) my bed, if I was working late at night… These are bad habits for Poppy. So at the beginning of the year I made a big change to my working life and gave myself a present of a dedicated working space. I’m not a fan of the word ‘office’, as it conjures up images of grey files, corporateness and Ricky Gervais (whom I actually think is brilliant – have you seen him sing on Sesame Street?) I also don’t like the word ‘study’ as it reminds me of being rubbish at revising for my GSCE’s and the panic of not knowing which king married which queen and who’s head got chopped off when.

I bought my desk from Phoenix on Golborne – a lovely little shop selling antique and reclaimed furniture on Golborne Road, Notting Hill

My work environment needs to be clutter-free and simple, with plenty of storage and lots of light. And have very easy access to tea. And biscuits. And cake. It has taken me a while to get it right, as by nature I am quite a messy person. It drives me mad. I get it from my dad. (It drives him mad too. What’s wrong with us? Why can’t we put things AWAY?) But when I do blitz the flat and tidy up and put everything in its place so that the surfaces are clear and the odds and ends have been banished, I breathe better, I sleep better and I work better… so I know it’s the key to my happiness. I just forget where I put it occasionally. (The key. Not my happiness.) So this has been a project in the making and after many hours perusing the Houseology website, it finally all started to come together…

So now I can proudly announce that my workspace is clutter free and consists of the perfect desk, the perfect chair (so, so comfortable!) the perfect lamp and masses of natural light… and these four elements have changed the way I work forever… Now I just need to keep it tidy. And that, my friends, is harder than you may think…

  1. I love that chair – and the calm feeling the white theme gives.
Have you tried Marie Kondo’s tidying method? I’ve just started her book and the preface alone has made me want to get up and sort of my mess properly!

A simple and clutter free work space means a clear and focused mind. I am heading back to university soon and want to make my work space the perfect place for doing exactly that, work. This post has motivated me and given me some great ideas, thank you! Working while sat in bed (yep, I do that too) is no more!

Your workspace is so lovely and clean. I know I cannot work when there’s clutter on my desk. I love the detailing on the legs of the chairs too.

  14. Your workspace looks lovely Poppy! We particularly like the desk and the vintage touch it gives to the space. Nice contrasts and beautiful job

  15. I’ve been meaning to do this for ages – set up a dedicated space for blogging etc – but still in laptop-on-lap-pinning-images-of-ideal-space-inspiration-mode! I’ve just pinned yours, the Eames chair is top of my wish list! Good luck with keeping tidy – I’m a Marie Kondo fan too, definitely life-changing!
