Bank holidays are like gold dust. They pop out of the calendar and glimmer with promise, turning a long week into a short spell and extending the weekend as if it were made of elastic. And even though it’s just by one day, these additional 24 hours can make you feel as though you’ve had a proper holiday.
I teamed up with the wonderful Radley, to live out my perfect Bank Holiday. This quintessentially British brand is responsible for me abandoning my massive handbag (heavy heavy heavy = sore back and achy body) and embracing the marvellous backpack. It’s a whole new world of arms free-ness! And Radley have the perfect backpacks for exploring London this Autumn.
First stop was Kell Scott Hair, where this clever chap worked some of the Kell Scott Notting Hill magic on my locks. Situated on Lambton Place – a picturesque cobbled mews – the light streamed in as they served up hot coffee and home made brownies as my hair was blow dried into soft waves. They also have the most comfortable hair washing recliners I have ever experienced… I could have stayed there all day!
Then it was off to Farm Girl Cafe on Portobello Road for a delicious breakfast, before hitting the market with Radley and spending all my hard earned pennies on things I definitely don’t need but who cares…
I love the London markets – food markets, clothes or antique markets… and Portobello market is one of my favourites. Starting a bank holiday weekend exploring this twinkly, historical and very pretty part of the city is always a total treat.
I love the grainy leather of this bag… and the colour block adds a gorgeous vintage appeal – it’s also extremely roomy!
If you’re heading to Portobello Road Market, try to get there nice and early to avoid the crowds, and don’t be afraid to haggle!
Sundays are days for the London parks… Hyde Park, Kensington Gardens and a coffee (and something sweet) at the park cafe… There’s something so peaceful about strolling in London’s greenery. And, as a devoted reader, I can’t think of a better way to spend a day than roaming the land and stopping to read a few pages of my latest Poppy Loves Book Club title … it’s a kind of meditation. I love it.
I never leave home without my essentials and a backpack is the perfect style to pack them in, keeping my hands free for taking photos.
M is for Monday. And Museums. And More coffee. The V&A is my favourite museum in London – I find I can spend an hour there or a full day… there’s always so much to see, new exhibitions and installations, and then there are the large light-filled spaces, where I like to sit and people watch. It’s my secret habit. My favourite pastime. I find I become a little invisible, and that suits me just fine…
The Victoria & Albert Museum courtyard is so peaceful. The ideal spot for tea and cake!
(My dungarees are from Whistles last year, but I thought the ones above looked similar!)
The bottle green colour of this backpack is very autumnal and goes perfectly with my staple black dungarees – and the leather is so soft and buttery…
Now that we’ve had our final UK Bank Holiday until Christmas (SQUEAL!) I urge you to dedicate one of your very precious allocated holiday days, to recreating your very own bank holiday this Autumn. Taking time to just be quiet and explore this beautiful city, is time very well spent. I loved exploring these special places in London – do pop them on your to do list, if they’re not there already… I’m now officially a backpack convert – thank you Radley, for showing me the light!
